Water Dripping From the Ceiling: What to Do Right Now

Water coming through a ceiling is one of those moments where minutes matter. Here is exactly what to do, and what the leak is most likely to be.

Do This First

  1. Shut off the water at the main valve if the dripping is steady or increasing.
  2. Turn off electricity to the room if water is near a light fixture or outlet.
  3. Catch the water with a bucket and, if the ceiling is bulging, carefully poke a small hole in the center of the bulge to let the water out in one place instead of spreading.
  4. Call an emergency plumber. Our emergency plumber team is available 24/7 at (888) 809-6756.

Where Is the Water Coming From?

If there is a bathroom above the drip, the leak is probably one of these:

  • Toilet wax ring — leaks each time the toilet is flushed. See toilet repair & replacement.
  • Shower or tub drain / overflow — leaks only when someone showers or bathes. See shower & tub repair.
  • Shower valve or supply line in the wall — a constant drip that may worsen.
  • Failed caulk or grout — water sneaking around the tub edge.

If there is no bathroom above, suspect a supply pipe leak (especially in winter — see frozen pipe repair), a leaking water heater on an upper floor, an HVAC condensate line, or a roof leak that only appears during rain.

How We Find It

Our plumbers use moisture meters and thermal imaging to trace the water back to its source so we open the smallest possible section of ceiling. Then we make a permanent water leak repair and provide documentation for your insurance claim. We cover Chambersburg, Indiana, Meadville and every city across Pennsylvania.
