Toilet Keeps Running? Causes, Quick Fixes and When to Call a Plumber

A toilet that keeps running is one of the most common calls we get from homeowners across Pennsylvania — and one of the most wasteful. A running toilet can quietly send 200 gallons or more down the drain every day, which shows up on your water bill long before you notice the sound. The good news: the fix is usually simple and inexpensive.

Why Your Toilet Keeps Running

Almost every running toilet comes down to one of five parts inside the tank:

  1. Worn flapper. The rubber flapper seals the flush valve at the bottom of the tank. Over time it warps, stiffens or gets coated with mineral scale, so water leaks past it into the bowl and the fill valve keeps topping the tank off.
  2. Float set too high. If the float is adjusted so the water level sits above the overflow tube, water pours into the overflow continuously.
  3. Failing fill valve. The fill valve (ballcock) should shut off when the tank is full. A worn valve may never fully close, causing a hiss or a constant trickle.
  4. Chain too short or tangled. A lift chain that is too tight holds the flapper slightly open; one that is too long can get caught under it.
  5. Cracked overflow tube or flush valve seat. Less common, but a cracked flush valve means the whole assembly needs replacing.

A 60-Second Test You Can Do Yourself

Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. If the water level in the tank is above the overflow tube, lower the float. If the toilet runs intermittently (the "phantom flush"), that is almost always a flapper problem too.

When to Call a Plumber

If you have replaced the flapper and adjusted the float and the toilet still runs, the fill valve or flush valve is probably the culprit. If the toilet is also rocking, leaking at the base or clogging frequently, it may be time to consider replacement with a modern high-efficiency model. Our toilet repair & replacement service covers all of it, usually in a single visit.

We provide same-day toilet repair in cities across Pennsylvania, including Doylestown, New Castle, Lock Haven. Call (888) 809-6756 and we will get it fixed.

Related Problems to Watch For

  • Toilet overflowing or gurgling when another fixture drains — this points to a main line issue, so see our sewer backup cleanup & repair page.
  • Water around the base of the toilet — a failed wax ring, which we cover under toilet repair.
  • Weak flush even after the tank refills — often mineral buildup in the rim jets, or a partial clog that our drain cleaning team can clear.
